Thank you for the lovely welcome fantail. I am quite new to polymer clay but quite quickly becoming a fanatic. I have been studying everything I can find, and accepting all the great advice offered by the experienced ones, so hopefully it wont be long before I have some work to show

Hi Blue, good to meet you. I have an unexpected house guest 2moro so I'm frantically trying to clean up my mess, (ex-hubby's new girlfriend & baby, lol, so feel the need to make a decent impression!) I can't wait to get a chance to have a good look around here, and see what gorgeous pieces you guys make, I have already bookmarked a couple of sites you've mentioned to have a look. Just need to get on with it now...

oohh I just went and had a look to see what the winter challenge meant, and I came rushing back to my corner. To quote Anubis, I have only been squishing and playing around until now, and haven't actually made anything worth finishing. I wanted to join the group so I could get inspired to really learn, so all I can offer at the moment is maybe a quiet giggle ( or raucous laughter, depending) as I share my first attempts with you. I'm going to start my first serious piece next week when my guest is gone, and I'll try and finish it for the challenge.

That's really all the challenges here are, donna, a project focus to see what everyone comes up with and be inspired. Even tho I've been playing with clay for years (OMG, like 3 years??) I'm still only dabbling, trying different things, Jill of all trades mistress of none kind of thing. I'm really just here to oggle the work of the goddesses (I'm looking at you Blue, Fanta, Anubi ...).

With this great medium we are always learning and I love seeing what everyone does and these challenges do inspire me. Nothing to loose, just have fun.

(I seem to have highjacked this thread) Morning, My visitor was a 'no-show' in the end, oh well, got a tidy house and some TIME now, yay. I'm off to buy some more clay this morning coz I've got no colours, I have super sculpey, thought I'd get dukit after reading things you have said. Got an idea for the challenge, I just hope it's not too hard for my first go. I'll try to work things out from my books and threads on here.... but I might need to ask for your advise if I get stuck Have a great day.

I don’t think there are any hard rules for the challenges except that you try to get it finished there is nothing wrong with asking questions as you go Hopefully we will be helpful

oh the squished that I have squashed over the last many years...... and the stomped also, has been lots of them..... with many more to come. I always looked at what others could do and got disheartened because I could not. Till one day I worked out that I will never be great at pretty little fairies and such. Why cause thats not what I really want to create my heart was never really in them. I very much sucked at the canes with the little pictures in them But now I have found my passion for the weird and strange beasts and the not so cute creatures. And we are having a ball. So just let the mind wonder and the hand play with the clay. What helped me was working on a more basic form cartoon like first then I started adding more features and realism as I mastered each stage. So dont worry everything you make will be fab because it comes from your heart.

It was heartening to read your message this morning anubis, you were sooo spot-on with what was happening.
In the early hours I concluded Hannie Sarris I am not!..yet, and decided if it can't be pretty, I'll go with ugly lol. Thank you so much, you confirmed my decision, feeling positive today.

Patience is something we often require None of my work happens in a few hours or days and lately I have to carve back a lot and then add more clay and with each sculpt we learn. It's true you have to discover your style and the subject you love I hope you find the the Hannie Saris in you but don't give up if you don't get there immediately
Do you use pre-made eyes or pre-baked balls of clay for eyes I know that makes it easier for me What part were you struggling with last night

Thanks fantail, to be honest I just got excited about it all and went gung-ho into the project with no ground work, armature, or plan, so I got ahead of myself and decided to go back and do it properly. I have 2 books I'm using for tutorials, Maureen Carlson and Katherine Dewey. I started working on a face from KD, but think I'll try MC now, more simplified. I wanted to get it finished for the challenge but just proved I cant rush in, coz I've wasted time really by mucking around. I haven't got any eyes yet, I was going to try to make and pre-bake some.

you are so right, anubis, you really have to listen to your heart / inner child / crazy voices! Probably why I still try a bit of everything, whatever takes my fancy, I just love trying new things. You really shouldn't compare your work with anyone elses, you have to have your own spin on things. And anubis, YOU spin like crazy! LOL love your work!
LOL donna, you're not alone on the gungho thing either. I get completely turned off if there's too much prep and planning involved. I always want it spewing forth straight from my head. - nice visual?

The prep work is probably why I take so long, I often put it off for a while and when the armature bits are there then I'm not in the mood for sculpting Then there are days of staring at the sculpt to see why it doesn't look right
Lol "crazy voices"
I constantly look at new techniques Kathrine Dewey's has some great techniques, I have recently taken her book out from the library and I'm constantly looking at how others do their work but still end up doing it my way
Remember the challange isn't due till end of April and if you're not finished you can show where you're up to, it just encourages us to finish something
As for eyes there are many ways to make them and you might even discover another. Simplest is just balls of clay baked (whole or cut in half) that you can paint afterwards, you can lightly draw the iris if it helps. Find which works best for you with the materials you have
