been wondering how youve been getting on ; )
sorry to hear youve been sick also. seams half the country's been busy with it a. Get well soon!
Many would recommend attaching your polymer sculpt to a base disk to sit on your cake. youd have some suitable cake picks at least?
I know the polymer clays all say they are non toxic but they are NOT SAFE for sitting directly on foodstuffs they do need a safe layer eg disk, pick, base inbetween.
have yourself a good day anyhow and hope your feeling better.

Hiya Nikki.. sorry to hear you've been sick.. yes it does seem theres an awful lot of sickness around right now.. I currently have a horrible flu' and I don't normally get sick..
I would have thought a simple cardboard disc would be sufficient to keep the clay from touching, pretty much as you described would be fine..
JMO but I think you should start working with the clay you intend to continue using ie Dukit, living doll etc..then you can get the right feel for it.. jovi and das are very hard to work with and don't hold detail well, you wouldn't want to use them for your figures....
I hope you are well soon and have a chance to get started with the clay.. ;D

Hope you feel better soon Nikki
I don't know how old this pamphlet is or what standards they have for polmerclay in NZ A lot of polymer clay's used to say nontoxic at one time but there are all sorts of articles on what this term means and then the ASTM was formed ... there was a good article that I read the other day I will see if I can find it again but basically most polymer clay products will tell you not to use the same utensils for food as for polymer clay. Paints for instance often say nontoxic yet some colours like red can contain cadmium etc... I'd rather stay on the safe side and make sure you have at least a small barrier between clay and cake - like the little disk you mentioned maybe also give it a rinse after you baked it to wash off any of the plasticizers left but it is good to do so before you paint on Dukit, remove any residue to make it easier to paint.
you can smooth the paperclay with a little water, it can go a bit soggy but then if you leave it a bit it will dry again
