Okay I have decided to give it my all and attempt to make a 4in fairy. I am working with a simple wire armature...I need to know if I pose the armature BEFORE or AFTER I put the clay on?

Before?? I think! :-)
You can fine tune afterwards, but I'm pretty sure you need the majority of posing sorted before you put the clay on.

yer it pays to have it planned out what you want to do before the clay goes on eh............ sometimes the arms and legs need extending to get them out the way whilst you do the head and torso . all depending on the thickness of the wire etc but ...... that patricia rose has a fantastic way of wireing hers threw the head and hangs them from above while she sculpts and its great idea and it keeps your hands from having to hold the body all the time and moching it around plus its not hard to snip the top wire after cooking and filling the gap in the skull with hair........

Kimmie I got my 20gauge wire from Spotlight and also from Zigzag. I would think most craft shops would have some??

When I went to mitre 10 they didnt have 20gauge wire in stock, but the man that served me is right into crafts and gave me some electrical flex to strip back. He told me the copper wire inside was better and easier to use than the silver kind. Whats more he gave it to me for free. Wasnt he nice. Now if I could only make a decent armature I would be happy.

ok just a thought but............. i read this stuff k
be cautious what wire you use as it can rust etc...(after a few years) although i have yet to see this happen go with galvanised or artistic wires etc.
be cautious as to what you cover wire with remembering any plastic coloured tape may well melt and seep threw in patches.

thats a very crude armature really ..but i keep a few of these around to play with poseing and such....... often theres more clay in the middle and less in the head so i can set eyes.............. you can use tin foil in place of the clay though.
