Hi dear lady............... short and tired today so this will sound sharp- sorry not meaning to sound bossy big love to you but here goes.
LITTLE dab of red on a dish with few drops of water to thin....... use a sponge ( dry) dab on paper first then on baby THINLY............... if its on to thick / dark wipe off straight away with wet cloth k................ when finished varnish with polymer varnish only. best to go lightest you can and build colour up .....dab lips with a paint brush... but all checks and knees- elbows , palms etc with sponge. dont paint babys creases to dark either.
you could check out the reborning sites that have tuts on painting they might be able to explain it better than I
p.s. dont use orangey red use magenta or ruby red. very thinly.
give you 5 more babies then you have to get genesis paints or else....... muhahahahahahahahaha.

Morning Dear Lady
$2 make up sponge is fine just wash it first...... or the $2 fine sea sponge is good to. or your local chemist will have better ones..... the wedge shapes are really handy for getting into the tiny areas........
do wash them first as they have sponge dust threw them when you buy them...... dry between a towel and squish out the water...... handy dandy. hope that helps.

I have a question about this too. On my icing stuff I use pastel chalk dust to give blush to cheeks, lips and eyes and other areas just for definition - can I use this on clay ?? Do I have to seal my clay after baking and/or painting ?? I have so much to learn....

I have painted my sculpts with acrylic paint before and after baking with good results. I use good quality paints 'Jo Sonja' "Folk Art" etc. Red can darken when baked and bleed as well. Its best to seal it afterwards.. (and in your case with the cake toppers maybe more so) If you dont want to add gloss use a matt sealer. There are specialist sealers/vanishes Fimo, Sculpey etc or PVA is also a good sealer for PC.. use slighty watered down to seal or 'neat' for shine such as lips fingernails etc. PVA is fine in the oven as well, and is compatible with PC (and cheaper than other products)
Pearlex powders can be used on the raw clay too.. I haven't used chalk but have seen others using it in books and vids.

I have used pearlex and eyeshadow for various bits - on raw clay. They do need to be sealed if they are going to be handled. I have used liquid Fimo but I don't like it, always end up with a rough matt finish. I've taken to dipping my finished items in self-shining floor polish!! This seems to seal in the powders too. Not sure if any of that will be helpful for your pieces tho!
