Has anyone used the polystyrene head armatures? I am just wanting to know what happens to the polystyrene in the oven. I was thinking of making some decor balls over polystyrene. Is there anything special I need to do to it to make it safe?

I have used polystyrene as a base worked well as it seems the polystyrene melts in the oven. So you need to make sure that the whole thing is sealed well. But I bake everything in side an oven bag to stop the smell anyway.

just my three cents worth.........
normal poly -----way toxic.......... poly heads do shrink..... but plenty of folks love and use them : )
secrist head armatures ( $ 10 ) --- great for a first try or tin foil and tape works up a charm
great idea about the oven bag anubis...... that might be the safest bet.
best of luck Bll .......Im sure it will go magically ;D ;D ;D

never tried it -sorry no help That would be a good idea too, baking outside if you use the polystyrene so you don't have to worry about the fumes

I haven't used polystyrene but did a few secrist ones. I still have two head armatures if you are interested as I really like making the heads myself now.
I also use the ovenbags, and rest the bags on polyfil fibre to reduce the flat smooth look you can get when baking on a plate. Also put fibre over thinner parts such as fingers and ears that I worry might fry. So far no problems.

Read the instructions and allow lots of air flow supposedly the bottom won't bake if its on paper/wood surface so you might have to turn over and bake again or bake on tinfoil -not sure still learning (that if its the glass bowl type oven) you can cover the sculpt with tinfoil if the tops burn so they say

ROTFLMAO SNAP! got one on Thursday! Burnt a wee babyhead to a crisp lol, trial and error u no. Was going to get an oven thermometer but forgot all about it. The glass chopping board i usually bake on won't fit so its lucky I got some ceramic tiles from Bunnings the other day, just luck. Have made a red/gold pendant, turned out well. just tried the old liquid Fimo (I've been overbaking it in the oven cos it always goes in with other stuff) Looks good. Its going to be sooo fab. 5 minutes to heat up instead of 12, not as long to bake either, will save lots of power EXCEPT at the moment I'm going nuts so baking heaps more than usual - I'm sure I'll settle down soon lol!
Have covered my first poly ball, too scared to bake it yet in case it collapses, but will have to bite the bullet soon.

DIsaster! The thing exploded into pieces! I will try the tin foil (you did mean UNDER the clay?) and also maybe wind wire armature around the ball underneath the tin foil.
On another note, I used that dollhouse baby tute to try another teeny babe, and I'm really pleased with how the face turned out - had a couple of goes at it. and the hands and feet were good, but I don't think it baked properly cos the arms both broke when I tried to put it all together. will keep trying.
love my conv-oven!

nah - I think the tin foil might be the fix. can't wait to see those dragons, Anubis. Glad you got your replacement ok. Frankly I'm shocked it was you rather than me that got the dud. That would have been just my luck.
Have fun!
Back to school tomorrow. buggr.
