Congratulations Blue you deserve it she really is stunningly beautiful, Mom says she looks ethereal Wow look at all those entries, Julie yours is pretty cool, not dark at all, I love it, very elemental, cool fingertips and bodice. So glad you entered your fairies Donna love all the detail right down to the wings in the shoes, Mom loves the your whole scene, the whole idea. Thank you so much for posting the photos. Do you know if Anubis's entry made it on time? I hope so.

I didn't see any other dolls. There was another doll near ours but she looked porcelain poured. Could that be hers? The name on it is Airini Bowler

Congratulations Blue, what an amazing piece.. well deserved 1st. Karen, I can't believe this is only your second sculpt, what a talent, she's lovely Fantail, super-cute and perfectly formed, I love her. Great work on the lantern flowers too. Jules, Love it.. very adventurous and well executed. Great piece. Me, hmmm.. well I loved making the tree, cage and budgie... the fairies - not so much, and I didn't leave any time for making them either, so they aren't good. whoops, it was a DOLL show after all.. hehe. Next time I'll stick to the rules re the stand/base, and no more fairies for me.. Dodgy box for them and I'll keep the budgie and cage.. Sadly, I heard Anubis piece had the packaging damaged in transit. So disappointing, I was so looking forward to seeing her work. Hopefully we'll get to see it at the Auckland show..

Oh no. I hope Anubis does get to enter the Auckland one and that it was just the package not her entry that got damaged Murphy's law seems to be activated by these comps
I know it doesn't look like it but I'm sure I spent more time on he wings lanterns and leaves then the doll - not including the amount of time I spent remaking the one hand armature. I had to tone the lanterns down cause they were too bright
Jules your idea was very original and your sculpt has wonderful details that makes me keep going back to look at her, I'm sure the judges felt the same

That is very bad news about Anubis's piece, I do hope you are right Fantail, and it is just the box. Or at the very least that the break is minor and can be fixed. My Mother Earth is permanently attached to her base, so I am not sure if she will ever be able to be shipped anywhere Donna I hear you on the fairies thing, I have definitely come to realise cute pretty fairies are not my thing. To me fairies should be naughty evil things and very elemental taking on characteristics from the land and wildlife. The star of your piece is definitely the budgie in the cage - but did you cheat and do some taxidermy instead of polymer?? ;D ;D I loved the flower lantern in your piece Fantail, it definitely looked like you have put a lot of time and love into it. Is that one of my bases Fantail? If so you did a great job varnishing it. I didn't think about mine before standing to paint it, and the roughness of it made it turn out a bit crappy, I really should have spent a bit of time sanding it I really enjoyed making my piece though, she is my favourite so far. I feel like I am getting closer to how I want to sculpt - no cloth clothing for one (I hate that part) and sculpting in a lot of details and texture instead of trying to get everything so smooth all the time. That and hybrids, I love the idea of meshing themes onto the female form. Do you guys watch Face-Off? I absolutely love that show! Sorry I have rambled a bit to much LOL Better go get ready for day two of the show, wish me luck

Yip its one of your bases and they do need a bit of sanding but staining it dark is easier then painting it one colour I used Jo Sonia wood stain mixed with some brown paint to get the right colour and a bit of the sealer mixed, in works a treat, I could've added another coat of sealer too make it more shiny but I think it gives a better feel of earth. I do want to get a little filler for the grainy bits on the sides, the lanterns still need some paint as they are rough since I just wanted to tone down the bright colour I painted the first they were sculpted from a superlight paperclay that feels like foam, unfortunately it dries really quickly and does need to be sealed
I think your piece is wonderful Jules I'm glad you are finding your niche it changes the way you sculpt when you do.

I'm sharing 2nd hand news re Anubis' entry, hopefully her or Blue will enlighten us - but as far as I heard.. the packaging was damaged and it was being returned to her, then back to Blue for showing at Auckland instead. At least we'll get to see her work then, yay. I'm a big fan, can't wait. You did a wonderful job of the lanterns Fantail, being hollow would have had it's difficulties, especially with paperclay. I'm glad you're finding your niche too Jules. It's great to experiment with the different styles and techniques initially, it's the joy of this medium, the possibilities are endless really. But it's even better when you start to enjoy a style which 'fits', thats when the best work is produced I think. Passion in your art really shows in the outcome. I appreciate and adore so many of the sculptors around, but the style I seem to be most excited about pursuing is the roombox type sculpts depicting little scenes. I like all the little details, and making small items etc. I particularly adore Anna Brahms work.. annabrahms.com/welcome.html(but for the doll shows, I'll just stick to a doll and basic setting.. haha) You weren't 'rambling' Jules, you silly girl.. LOL.. it's great to have discussions about our clay and creating again.. thats the joy of being able to share here - with no eye-glazing.. hehehe. Hope you and Blue enjoyed the show, and you had a successful weekend. edited to add.. I've seen most of the face-off shows and love the series.

Thanks Bll, thats a really long walk, good job for both of you, was the terrain rough and are still trying to sell your house. It's an interesting walk, some steep and slippery sections but pleasant. Any excuse to hang out in the Central Plateau really. Can't wait for the ski season to start. Then end of January is the Tussock Traverse. **Jules?** I am planning to do the 13km but the main event is the 26km from Desert Rd to Chateau. The house is still technically on the market but a "quiet" listing - no advertising. We might try again next summer.
