Hey everyone Thought I would start the June thread I am starting a few new pieces, including my Auckland Doll show piece. And the hardest part I always find at the start is the pose. I always try and think of the final piece and how it will fill up its space. But its something I always struggle with. I go online and look through Google images to try and find the right pose, and I have Daz but I find it hard to use. How about you? Do you find this easy or hard? Have any tips?

She's alive!! Yay I have started my Auckland show piece. Aren't I a good girl getting started so early - so not like me She is only wire, tinfoil and masking tape right now but loving her so far. In Pinks word she is "Wrong in all the right ways" And I will be making another doll along side her, which will be a female faun. I love love love Pan's labyrinth, so hopefully she will look like she could live in that world But all in all I am feeling quite good right now. By changing Dollworld I have freed up so much time I would normally have spent working on my products and researching prices and range. I have cleaned out my office and all my tools and crafts are getting sorted, and loving the new path my sculpting has taken. Everything is just adding up to a year (or second half of year I should say as its already mostly gone) of lots and lots of creating

Glad you have your pose sorted I love fantasy so I can't wait to see your faun. I find the pose very hard cause the outfit will change depending on the pose - even with poseable sculpt its still really difficult. I have no tips, what I do know is that I tend to go back to the first pose I had in mind. My entry is still just parts of armature I'm hoping to get the armature done this week but getting it right is important, already I think I have to fix parts of it. Happy creating Jules Oh Yeah for any others who would like enter in the Auckland Doll show this year 21st & 22nd of September - the theme is "On a musical note" but its not compulsory ($6) entry fee and prizes to be won but even if you don't enter you will be surrounded by creative people and doll supplies and craft materials there should be updates about the show on this site later this year. dollfederation.co.nz/index.php?page=events_shows

It is so important to get the armature right, it really sets up for the rest of the sculpt, not to mention gets the proportions right
I will post some pics once I get some clay on my faun

Very true and can be quite tricky to get it just right. I look forward to the photos, I still have to finish my mini creature/faun guy that is sliding on a leaf I think I got stuck on how to paint his fur before I could finishing his hands.

Is the fur sculpted or real fur? I want my faun to be very earthy, so I am thinking she will have legs that are partly bark/vines and part fur. I just haven't worked out exactly where the fur will feature yet

my little guy's fur is lightly sculpted mostly smooth but to be painted, I will use mohair for the head though.

That is what I am thinking for mine too. Sculpted leg fur and wool hair. I have basically tossed out the idea of trying to incorporate real leg fur, but ya never know how things things will turn out, I tend to make tweaks to my original idea as I go

That's the way to go, change it as you need otherwise we over think it too much You have great ideas of the bat though. I always have blanks in my design like the clothes i know what I don't want but not sure about what look I should go for, working on it while I work on the sidekicks armature

It would be nice if the finished piece looked as good as I could see it in my head when I started LOL, but I do think I am getting better I have blanks too though, usually its because I have a idea what a certain part will look like, but have no idea how to achieve it

I was just too cold today to want to sculpt so I ended up doing some shopping and look at my goodies... I got the candle holders, the very cool wood burl and flat wooden leaf thing from a second hand shop And the round light fittings, the plaques (no idea what these are, maybe a handle?) and the very cool metal cupboard fittings from Demolition Traders The burl I think its looks like driftwood, so maybe a sea creature? The wooden candlestick I think would look cool with a medusa serpant coiling up each one (maybe one male one female version?) I have no idea for the wooden leafy thing, but it looks cool Nor the brass buttons, but at the very least they can go on the Steampunk cart The two small light fittings will be used for the Faun and the Auckland piece, the large one just a spare for now

Wow that's fantastic finds the little metal fitting will make fantastic wheels and would look great on something steampunk related Its great how these finds can inspire a sculpt.

They would make cool wheels, but small. They are about 3cm. They had smaller ones too with a different pattern, but not quite as open as the bigger ones. They were only $1 each so I should have got more. If you wanted some let me know and I can grab you some at the same time

No worries, they have plenty Here are the smaller ones. They all have a shaft at the back that will take a screw

The smaller ones are cool too, but I too prefer the bigger ones.
Bunnings near me no longer sells Dukit or the JoSonia paints ugh. I think I still Have one place left to get the paint and too places left to buy the clay but a downer when it gets harder to find what you know works.

Yeah Bunnings did a complete overhaul of their craft section and look to be stocking the sculpey range. I use coloured clay in all the mini kits I make, but I just bring in 500g blocks of a no-name brand. It works fine for the mini kits, nice and soft and easy for the kids to use.

I still haven't tried the bit you gave me, sometimes I need the firmer clay though.
