Hi all... hoping you all have a great week too... 1 step forward and 2 backwards on my project I'm afraid.. lol It's been noted that I haven't made a transition from 2D to 3D in that I'm sculpting 'flat', particularly faces. So I have to take a step back and study 3D images and guides, bone structure and muscle tones before I can continue... I've printed off some good guides now of sculls and 3D digital imaging. Blue has sent me some very helpful images as well and given me some valuable advice so hopefully all will go fine from now on... So much to learn huh! but the basics must be accomplished first. Soooo... I had to slice and dice with the scalpel, back to the bone.. eeeeeek what made that weird was my horrible boys 'forced' me to watch the 2nd Hannibal movie the other night... if you've seen it you'll know why it creeped me out slicing off the face... Onward and upward... have a great day... ;D

Nah you weren't mean at all... I saw it myself and so did Damien... I absolutely welcome constructive criticism, I don't want to keep making the same mistakes over and never being happy with the result... I'm so lucky to have you lot to help me be a better sculptor.
We were talking about how a lot of artists can be recognised by their style of faces... well I don't want to be recognised as 'the flat face sculptor' heeeeheeee!!!!
;D
A bit more study then I'll be back to re-doing.

Good luck with the studying Donna Sculpting is one of those for ever learning subjects I too find it hard to get the facets of the face right- wonder if I'll ever fully understand it
Doing some more tests I tried to see if I could bleach some t-shirt material - not the right colour Tried to paint a pattern with acrylic- it bleeds a bit and I don''t want the paint to be thick either then I tried Genesis- still have to bake it to see if it will withstand the oven
You won't be recognized as a flat face sculptor by any means Donna Keep up the great work

Jules Thanks for sharing... I adore your snuggle babies, they are soooo cute. The moses baskets are perfect too... awesome work. The tiny little beanies are.. tiny, geez. Did you knit those as well? Love the little poly baby.. I enjoy seeing ethnic sculpts. I would like to sculpt some Maori figures soon actually.
I was wondering how you were getting on with your show plans too.
Hey Fantail.. did you get a chance to play with the Aves yet? Are you painting the acrylic on fabric? or the clay?
Thanks for the supportive comments... got lots of studies now and I'm sure it will be better with refs. Trying to sculpt a 'good' head using your imagination is a bit hard... haha, and staring at people isn't effective either coz everyone has such different heads and face shapes LOL. I'm looking forward to it, I love learning.

Thanks guys Yes the beanies are hand knitted. I am not great at knitting things, but I seem to be able to manage these simple little hats okay I think I have everything under control for the fair, mostly because I did the Hamilton Doll fair last month, so have everything left over from that. Probably famous last words though and I'll start thinking about all the things I have forgotten To be honest the best part I am looking forward to is that my sister (who sells charms) and I are staying in the Auckland CBD on Saturday and will be hitting the casino, enjoying some cocktails...and no kids - Yay

Yes I have played with the Aves a couple of times now and carved some back - its quite strong though I was able to snap a thin stick of it, it's not easy to carve or brake as it gets thicker
the acrylic was on fabric
enjoy your weekend Jules I like the little beanies too

'morning everyone.. Wow you knitted those tiny beanies too Jules... multi-talented people on this forum... ;D All the wee sculpting you lot get up to, I don't know how you all manage such small scale and have so much detail... I hope you have a smooth run for the fair organising. Your Auckland plans sound heaps of fun, great that you will have your Sis to share the mischief.. hehe. Fantail did you know you can get a textile medium to mix with acrylic paint for fabrics? I use Plaid brand.. under $10. It does say on the bottle to basecoat with Folkart thickener to prevent bleeding.. I've never seen that tho' nor used it... I would imagine watery PVA would act as a basecoat. I understand 'flat face' problem now.. (it wasn't THAT bad I don't think, just not 'right') anyways.. it was the base where I went wrong, the baked armature I added to. Remember me saying I will make mini sculls for that.. well I didn't from now on I will... I don't have Fantails blessed patience so I will try to adjust this one again... (dont want to make more teeth and eyes)... if it doesn't work I'll start again... how much time do we have again?... LOL.

Approx 3 months I didn't know about the textile medium, but I'd like to try the Genesis since I've seen people use it on canvas, so it should be fine. I have an acrylic thickener, guess I could also try it, but its just distractions Need a sunny weekend to make some eyes
I thought it would not be so bad Donna - we are our own worst critic
Yip it is nice and strong stuff Blue

Hey Fantail.. hope you had a great day today...
the textile medium just allows acrylic paint to set into the fabric and be washable.. just means you can use artist acrylic paint and not have to buy special fabric paint.. (which of course is acrylic paint with textile medium in it lol)
LOL at cracking the whip at me hiney... ;D I had a little play with adding more clay to the head today.. I think I've got the idea now, its looking much better.. Blue I have a Jaw now, a BIG jaw.. LOL... I stopped while the going was good.. still got lots to do but at least it doesn't look like it was hit by the back of a bus now.
That Aves sounds very interesting indeed... cant wait for your conclusion Fantail.

The Super white Aves seems a lots stronger I made a thin tube and though I haven't really tried to break it I did squeeze and it didn't break as you might expect I will keep an eye out in the future for the textile medium, thank you Donna Glad you are making headway with the face
I'm trying to figure out how to pose the hands I want them to be expressive

I wasn't happy with last years hands the prep work is so important not being able to decide means i can't make the armature as strong as I wish
It was just a bit of left over clay that I turned into a tube over the skewer, It hurt my fingers but I did mangage to break it, though it was about 1mm thick max thinner in parts the flat bits are easier to break but as a tube it was quite strong

Hellloooo... ;D I've been sitting all morning on my back step.. in the sun... SCULPTING yeeyah!!! bugga the dishes, big messes and things to do... I'm obsessed with getting this face right.. even if it kills me.. (as in starving or stiff necked) Bll.. wicked cake for master 5.. its absolutely amazing as was last years cake.. you have a great talent for cake decorating. Bet your fella was so happy with it. Equally as talented with polymer clay don't forget... pfffftt not happy with those hands Fantail.. I'd be over the moon if I got hands that perfect.. and I went and had another look at them... drooool - at everything about that sculpt. Fantastic that it took that much pressure to snap the Aves, sounds like it will be strong and flexi enough for what you want. btw I despise black flecks and dark fluff.. and where does orange specks originate, I cant find anything around here 'orange' grrrr. Not to mentioned dirty smears.... ;D Jules those babies of yours have the cutest faces, especially the pink and blue bubs... cuuuute.

Wow BLL that is a great cake of Gotham city and the bat sign - mmmh wonder what it tastes like ;D Hope your spotty boy feel better in no time Muuuuuust touuuuchhhh cluuuuuuyyyyyyyy!!!!
Yip its winter with heater making the air circulate and dark clothing that leaves fluff in every exposed inch of clay- soooo frustrating bearly have the shapes blocked out and i have to scrape back the plastic wrap and bags leaves marks so I've placed the parts on some wax paper inside the resealable bag- It seems to reduce those dreaded lines
