Hi Fantail, yes he is cast in a resin which I have been very happy with, its super strong and holding very well on the small thin portions. At the moment I have just been sticking with white, but will look at adding some colour. Was thinking he could be all sorts of colour, pink blue.... Its such a tiny amount of resin each doll I was thinking I will put some of the clear part of the resin in different bottles, and then colour those. That way every time I cast in that colour it should be the same colour. Well that's the theory anyway No problem about the link, and if there is anything you need in her range that she doesn't stock let me know, as she is happy to import to order

Thanks Blue I have recast him, and spent a bit of time sanding, so he looks good. I am thinking his neck could be a bit longer since BJD dolls generally have pretty long necks. So will probably resculpt/remould that part. The biggest trick has been to cast without nasty air-bubbles. But I have found using a toothpick to push into the problem areas, and then holding a flame over the resin to draw the air bubbles out has really helped. Hopefully the more I cast him the better I get at it. I estimate each doll would take 1 hour to create from start to finish. And faster if I was doing more than one at a time. I popped him on my keyring and took him for a spin out in the car today, he looks so cute hanging from the ignition

Ok i have an obligation to say this................ and dont hate me I am not trying to be horrible....
Resin precautions MUST DO’S -Always wear-- protective clothing, Safety glasses, Gloves ( pref nitrate---latex will be ok if you are using easycaste), ventilator mask with cartridges ( not a dust partial mask this is useless for toxic gas) -Do not use resin near open flame-think toxic gas..( also one wisp of flame on a glove will melt it to your finger) always use good ventilation. -Resin material and gas are toxic...keep pets and children away from your resin workspace. -If you can… do your resin works in the garage or an area well ventilated away from your living space.
Hints for bubbles -Get a vacuum chamber or compression chamber it is the only way to caste resins bubble free -you can dust RTV with talc prior to pour it helps stop bubbles sticking -you can paint in small cavities with brush to help before pour -before mould pour-- Pour your resin from one plastic cup to another in a thin stream to help eliminate bubbles -when resin is poured…. You can tap mould gently on bench top this will help bubbles raise.( don’t squeeze mould just very gently bounce it
on the sanding note.....resin dust is also toxic always wear a proper mask
BUT keep up the good work... your doing really really great and it will get easier the more you do..
Your little bjd is adorable and the end result will be well worth the learning curve....

Hi Blue, that's no problem, advice is always welcome ") I read the flame trick on another forum, but you can only do it if the resin is non flammable, and I haven't had any issues with it, no fumes or steam or smoke, no reaction other than a pop pop pop of the little tiny bubbles. The entire doll only uses about 20mls of resin. So you can image how little resin there is in each of the 12 two-part moulds that make up the doll. Would love a vacuum chamber, but somehow I image they cost a lot But who knows, if the little doll takes off and sells a few maybe I would splash out, but for now got to slog it out the hard way

With all due respect,,, The Resin Data sheet does state “combustible and gas hazard”. You will not always see or smell the toxin from these. Anyone that suggesting you flame these resins needs a smack up the side of the head … I am dead serious. You might get away with heating bubbles in clear polyurethane resin for the eye making that we do,,, but ridged resins are not the same substance and need to be treated as hazardous. Liquid Resin is a highly toxic carcinogen and to use it without proper precautions you are risking your health. Again, I do not say this to be horrid I am saying this because I care Part A barnesonline.shopau4.info/catalog/barnes_pdf/msds/Barnes%20-%20Easycast%20Part%20A.pdfPart B barnesonline.shopau4.info/catalog/barnes_pdf/msds/Barnes%20-%20Easycast%20Part%20B.pdfHave you thought of making yourself a little vibrating table ( these can be an old foot spa with a bit of wood on top) put your moulds on the top and it will vibrate away for the duration and it will help pop out air before setting time. Some people have used a mount and an orbit sander it will do the same trick. Also talc brushed on will help stop the air bubble traction against the RTV. Do Keep at it…. I swear it will get easier and quicker and you will have that hot little product in your hands before you know it

The flame is not touching the resin, just burning off the oxygen above it But I am happy to try any method to get the best results, nothing worse than going through everything to find a bubble ruining it I have seen the talc method, but was worried the hands and feet (which are the biggest problem pieces) are so small (like a drop or two of resin fills them up) that the talc might take up to much room. But will give it a go tomorrow. Can't hurt to try Will also try the vibration method, I am sure my husband will have a tool that will work, I swear he as everything power tool there is, yet every time we have a new project there always seems to be a new tool he needs!

Ugh webs- websites don't work any more (not for over a week now since they mentioned the 4 hour scheduled outage for the 20th) Guess I'll have to look into finding a reliable image hosting site if they don't come back

images sites are tough for us with the whole naked doll images So many sites will block them How about dropbox? Its super easy www.dropbox.com/s/zq0m9u7z6d122mf/IMG_0650.jpgYou get a folder on your desktop, you drag folders, files into it and the auto upload And you can just right click on a file, still on your local desktop folder, and select get link and it will open the link to it like the one above. I have sent you an invite to open a drop box account, but have just realised the link cant be viewed in a forum (stink) so might not be the image host you need
