Hey everyone Can you believe the Hamilton Doll fair is next week?? Eek! What is everyone doing? Entering a piece? Having a Table? visiting? Skipping the whole thing? I am entering a piece, and have two tables this year A bit of a gamble considering how quiet it was last year But still looking forward to it, just got to get the final touches on my comp piece done (like clothing, hair and stand - just a couple of things left LOL)

Hi
Where in Hamilton is it? and what dates? I might be able to get my hubby to look after the kids for the day if I'm lucky.
I'm so glad you are nearly finished your doll. Shushannah

Have a happy May everyone.. geeez I think I missed March and April actually, been quite hectic lately.
Great to hear you're nearly finished your Hamilton piece Jules, I hope all goes smoothly with the finishing touches and you do well with your table sales.
My piece went in the rubbish bin a few weeks ago.. I broke her to pieces just to be sure she wasn't resurrected. She wasn't going well, a substitute piece to begin with, and no time to work on the idea I really wanted to sculpt. Never mind.. I'll definitely enter next year.
Not sure if I'll be travelling to the show or not. I hope you get to go to it Shushannah, you'll love it.
I've started my Auckland piece meanwhile.. yep getting started early, doing bits and pieces when I can. I have two figurines to complete for it (again) and hope to do another piece too if I can. You may remember I had my Sis and family arrive from Oz smack at the end last year, well my other Sis is coming this year at the same time.. so I'm onto it NOW LOL.

Thanks for the info.
I hate it when a doll doesn't go well. I am trying to soft sculpt at the moment instead of polymer clay sculpting

Sorry, as a joke my charming daughter came and posted my reply before I had finished. aghhhhh
As I was saying I have been trying soft sculpture. My first attempt I named....... 'Potato nose'. I think you can imagine what it looked like LOL!!!
I am now attempting number two, which seems to be better. I'll wait until the end before I make further comment.
Well practice makes perfect!!

The fact that my eldest (a sculptor by trade) cracked up laughing every time he looked at her, convinced me to stop wasting time and clay on her.. LOL.. I guess they don't always work out how you hope.
LOL at 'potato nose'... I give my sculpts unflattering nicknames too..
Can't wait to see your soft sculpture when you're ready. (would like to see potato nose too, haha)

Hi Sushannah hope you enjoy the soft sculpture and the second attempt goes better they can be quite fun there are some great books on cloth dolls by Patti Medaris Culea with patterns at the library I'm still contemplating buying one of them though a few are already out of print
That was very mean of him Donna you should tell him constructive criticism only
I have started an armature- just started - too tired yesterday to get any further with it
Good luck with the prep for the show Jules and Blue hope you both get lots of buyers this time

I've bought two of Pattis books and made a doll out of one which I gave to my sister as a pressie. I would really recommend her books, she is easy to follow and shows techniques as well as patterns. I tend to love techniques mostly as I get bored always following a pattern.
I found the firmer woven fabric easier to sculpt than the stretch I am working with now. I am working out of the Barbara Willis book for this one.
I threw out potato nose like the other creation that got thrown in the bin. Isn't it awful when your peice gets laughed at. Good luck with your new one when you get started.

Barbara Willis cloth doll artistry book is beautiful even just for inspiration I too only used the patterns in the other book as a guide but then I wanted to make a mermaid and only had access to Medaris' first book Stretch makes a big difference to how they turn out hope you get the pattern sorted

There are some fabulous cloth doll artists around.. Can't wait to see your work.
Yep it is a bit sad when you give up on a piece thats not working.. but still better to know when to quit on it I suppose, leaving your dignity intact.. lol. Lol at Damien being mean.. nah he's just honest, and he was right.. and he did try to hide his amusement at first.. hehe..
I went to the Zoo for Mothers Day and saw Damiens work in RL.. it looks amazing.. took a few pics so I'll put them up for you to see as soon as I get the time.. also still have to show Morgans charms too.. and I have a link to some wonderful cloth dolls that I'll hunt for as well.
Anyway.. All the very best to Blue and Jules for a great weekend at the Hamilton Doll Show.. I hope you make lots of contacts, heaps and heaps of sales, and bol with the competition.. Take lots of pics for us too.. and let us know how you're going if you can..
;D

Hey everyone. Had a good day today at the fair. It wasn't super busy, but a steady stream of customers through the day. So all good, and looking forward to another day tomorrow. Ruth took out the original doll category with her lovely doll, and my one received a blue ribbon There was a real lack of dolls in any of the categories this year, was maybe half of what was there last year Here is a pic of Ruths doll And mine

Thanks everyone for your lovely comments Yes you could either send them down with Ruth, or I would gladly have everyone send me your entries so I can take them in to the Hamilton fair (including you Ruth if you wanted to save a trip down) Always a bit of a worry to post them though I guess

Hey lufflies... sounds like you have all been kindof busy with this and that. Really enjoyed the weekend, was my 4th Hamilton show abet a two year break lol... always good to catch up with people tho and see everyones works. Some mighty interesting dolls there always lots of pretty lace and boobles to see and oogle over. came home with a couple of antique victorian ladies hankies edged with the most magical hand tatting with intentions to add it onto silk dolls dresses.......now tho i dont have the heart to chop them up....sigh just to pretty and quite fragile. Yvonne sampson has new effner moulds..........OMG......... in a much smaller mini and also a larger also.OMG.......so so so so very tempted .... they are so adorable .....and also a new twin to the wee dolly i have.......ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh mannnnnnnnnnnnnn...tempting and tempting.... have to say tho that the comp was so small this year it was......sad the dolls entered were all so very adorable but just so few of them... Maybe if you are all interested to make it a challange to enter something for next year that would really help... just to keep dolls in view and encourage others to *give it a go* and yes i am happy to collect the Ak dolls and bring them down thats not a problem at all. *The Cake Eater* was just a bit of fluff and fun... her clothing was made with translucent clay over polymer. Her new owner is a huge cake fan WINK... lol sometimes it is a little sad to see them go even when we do not make them for our own. But Jules i adored your piece... oh those masks ....wow........ hope your finger heals fast also... the hard thing was being able to see them properly on the table even at all of the shows when things arent eye level makes me want to climb in and do eye joga to see all of the details but thank you very much for letting me have a good oogle......utterly cool works anyhow enough from me.....I have a studio to go organize lolol... ..hope you have all had a most wonderful day x

Thanks Donna and Shoshannah I am sooooooooooooooooooo over full-on costumes now. I am not good at sewing, and clothes on my tiny dolls is very frustrating. So after the Corpse Bride dolls, two Twisted Tale dolls and the Labyrinth dolls I am very much over outfits and looking forward to doing some dolls without much clothing. Especially the Making a Splash competition. practically no clothing there yay and determined to get started on it early and not leave it till the last minute! And I have just signed up for yet another fair (I must be a sucker for punishment!) So this year I have done the Auckland Craft Fair and the Hamilton Doll Fair. And that leaves Senz in July, Auckland Doll fair in September, Armageddon on October and Hamilton quilt and craft fair in November. Not sure if the Tauranga doll fair is running this year, but I may have to give that one a miss as the Hamilton quilt fair is a big one with 18k people through the doors

I can sew full size clothing without a problem... but maaaaan these mini costumes sure try your patience.. Lorenzo's shirt was a major pain-in-the-butt, mini cuffs, mini collar, pants with belt loops and belt.. sheesh, how on earth do you get your fingers around all that. Sadly I forgot about that and I'll be doing it again soon... I shoulda' made a FISH.!!!!
I'm 3/4 way through the 2 figures now.. one broken arm and one broken leg a piece.. wonder if I'll ever stop with the breakages, but they must have had weakness in the joins as I didn't do much for them to break.... One needs the arms finishing.. and hands will be last coz I hate them so much. The other needs a head. The trickery will be setting them up. And I don't like the nose on one either, but I'm trying to ignore that because I know it wont go well if I try to change it. I bought material already too.. Lets hope I get finished in time.. LOL.
Sounds like you have heaps on this year Jules. All good for business though huh, you've got to be out there to be known.
