Thanks Fantail Yesterday was pretty busy, especially for a Thursday. Hopefully today will be even busier
Sadly my comp piece is still a base. It will be my focus over the next three weeks But no idea if I will finish it in time

Good to hear it was busy for you.. hopefully today was good too..
"still a base".... eeeeek! Mind you - you got last years piece finished quickly, I'm sure you'll get it done in time. I need to remember to send my entry-thingy through early next week.. will have to think of a 'name' I guess.
Have I ever mentioned how much I HATE sculpting hands? and leaving them until last certainly is NOT a good idea.. I've really stalled because of the hands.. they just aren't good enough. I'm getting really over my piece.. it needs to be finished... now!!!
However.. tomorrow is another day.. ;D

I Know what you mean about getting tired and specially sick of hands I have worked on the hands for quite a while too and not too happy as the armature was a bit short...
Sooooo tired right now I need to bake my piece again so I can get to the next part then bake then back to the base which is still in pieces and very incomplete then there is hair and paint right now I'm afraid to bake as I don't want my piece to darken too much I'm thinking of covering my piece with a serviette
yeah what to call my piece - disaster, headache, incomplete comes to mind hehe any one notice that they changed the definition of art doll from last year Last year it was something that didn't have moving parts, this year is something more conceptual then lifelike ;P
Good luck girls and Jules I hope the rest of the Hamilton fair goes great for you

I STILL haven't done the hands...
I've wet a paper towel and draped over my sculpts.. it works well imo.. especially as I use SS in my mix.
LOL at your names for your piece.. I could choose from one of those as well...
Next year I'm only doing ONE sculpt and it will have NO hands and NO miniature clothing.. okay.. remind me I said that next year.. LOL...
All the best everyone...

LOL I said last year I wasn't going to follow the theme I played with fire trying to melt the edges pf the fantasy film and the one colour that I wasn't going to use is the one which shape came out really nicely while another I had my heart set on ended up with a hole in it Guess I'm sticking with the third

Best laid plans huh!! It seems we don't have much control over how these creations want to evolve.. well that's what I'm finding as I go along. They seem to choose how they want to look, which embellishments or style they like best.. etc.. Hahaha.. I wish they'd learn to sculpt their own HANDS...

;D Hahaha..
Well I won't be sculpting that coz then I'd have to sculpt TWO pair of hands.. eeeeek..
I'm totally over the hands, I've done them again and they're no better, so I'll take a break and go on with making up some hair and clothing and finish the accessories. I'll come back to them later.
Hope you're all going ok..
Hey Bll how are you getting along? Haven't heard from you in awhile..

Yeah I've missed BLL's beautiful beads and Lindiloo's fairies and even seeing some of our new members work would be nice My comp piece is still in pieces and I played with translucent clay and that super light polymer clay(which is quite wonderful texturally though a bit soft to sculpt with) to make "accessories" I wanted to add a little Magic gloss to the fantasy film but its been in the window all day and with no sun the tiny drops aren't setting Just busy sanding - lots of sanding before I can sculpt or paint further- horrible little fluffies

I really should make something up about the forum to send out to all the people that buy my kits and moulds. And to give out at the fairs. It would be lovely to get more kiwi creators on here. I'll add it to my list I was meant to just make up the armatures to connect everything together today. But once the doll had an armature she was like "Hello - I'm the hero of this piece, why are you wasting your time on the base and those other lesser characters - make me first!!" So she now has her torso all done and in the oven for her first part-bake I am lovely her so far, but its still early - still plenty of time for it all to turn to crap LOL

Hi
It's been ovely reading all of your posts. It sounds like all of the dolls are coming on well for competition. I am with all of you with hands. THEY ARE SO FRUSTRATING!! I gave up on the pair I was trying last night The clay just kept getting too warm and seemed to melt into some very interesting positions. Just not nice interesting unfortunately.
I have been wanting to post and send photos for a while but we have had a bit of a dumb time of it lately. In February my Father in law passed away from cancer and then six weeks ago my husbands 18 year old niece suddenly died of Menengitis in Levin. It has actually only started to sink in that she has gone. Luckily we have a faith in Christ which has really helped. We have all been sick with the repetitive flu also, and just feel as though we are struggling to get on top of things.
The kids and I have now started sculpting lessons which has really kicked me into gear again. I feel so much more motivation to sculpt and I have finally been able to give myself permission to create regardless of the kids needing me. I feel quite liberated.
I am really looking forward to seeing everyone's pieces at the show. Good luck with all of the things still left to do.
Shushannah

Hi Bll.. all the best with your plans to sell and move. Decluttering... eeeek, I SHOULD move too, so I could declutter, I've lived in my house for 30 years, heaps of collecting of treasures (aka hoarding). Great to hear all is well, looking forward to you having time for your wonderful creations.
So happy to hear from you Shushanna.. sorry to hear you've had some sad times.. ((hugs)) to you. Sculpting is good for the spirit, and sharing the creativity with your kids will be wonderful. Keep us posted on how you're getting along.. ;D

Bll, I hope the sale goes well so you can have a spot to sculpt again soon.
Hi Shushannah, sorry to hear about your family members passing away and glad you are finding the sculpting is liberating
Only just finished baking again after the arm broke and learn that fantasy film shrinks hardens and becomes opaque the more you bake it - i have no control over this sculpt but its so hard to let go of the control
Good luck with all the final prep people

Hey Bll, hope the house sale goes well I've been through the open home fun and know what a pain it can be, especially if it drags out But hopefully it goes fast for you and you can get back to your sculpting in no time Welcome back shushannah, I am so sorry to hear of your loss That must have been very hard, especially with one so young I must be crazy, as sculpting the hands is my favourite part (that and the feet) but only when the hands have armatures, without it they are too hard and never come up fine enough for me My piece is so close to done. Just one head and one arm to go, and then all finished I have really enjoyed this piece, I think it will be a turning point in my style Hard to believe its only a week away! So looking forward to seeing everyones work

Fantail I didn't even know you could bake Angelina film, so I've learnt something there. I must make something with it soon, I've had some film and fibre for ages and still haven't tried it yet.
Jules its great to hear you've enjoyed your piece, that makes it all worthwhile. I only don't like hands coz I can't get them as good as I'd like to. I must say that these two have much better hands than Lorenzo does, so hopefully..
I spent part of the day sewing a top for an 8" sculpt.. on the sewing machine... total madness I tell you.. it took ALL my patience to get through it, now handsewing the rest of it this evening.. geeez.
I destroyed an accessory that I was very happy with.. heat gun and nylon don't go well. Aaaaand I'd thrown out the leftover material, telling myself not to hoard coz it was finished and fine.. so now I have to source some more and re-make it... dammit !!!
I'm struggling to look past the imperfections and trying to accept my current ability, BUT I am happy with what I've achieved...I like my piece, and it is what I had in my head.. ;D

Donna as much as I like doing hands when you see my competition piece you might want to kick me for cheating on the hands with this one That is such a shame that the accessory was destroyed, and that you threw out the leftover material I don't envy you all the sewing. I wish I could get better at sewing, but I just don't seem to have the knack for it. So glad this piece doest have any clothing to sew - its probably one of the reasons I have enjoyed making it. Its also nice not having to cover up all the work done on sculpting with clothing. That is always a sad part for me.

Ha.. I won't kick you, promise.. I'd do anything to come up with an idea to avoid hands, haha. Well I tried to source appropriate material to replace my damaged item.. but no-go.. and you won't believe that when you see it, but I can't find any. Typical huh. So I'm going to have to use creative license on this one and do a repair so it looks like its supposed to be that way.. hahaha.. Well I did some resin work and needed a tad more to finish so I scraped out the containers and mixed it together but guess what.. not the right ratio and it hasn't hardened... sticky mess on my small accessory.. I'm a disaster you know.. I really annoy myself.. Luckily it usually works to mix a small amount more, add a tiny bit more hardener and reapply, it seems to set the underneath resin.. fingers crossed. I will be finished on time.... I will...

Sometimes making something 'supposed to look that way" just makes it more interesting, gives it a bit of a story So I hope it all comes together for you I've had the sticky resin enough before. When setting the tiny pieces for the mini bjd I have to mix such a tiny amount it was hard to get the ratio right, so I ended up getting in a heap of syringes to help. Today is D day for me. Tomorrow I have the kids, and Thursday Matt is taking my piece with him up to Auckland. So all must be done today. I just have to finish the head and hair and then all done yay
