It changes from day to day. I just finished mixing another half pound of sculpy but not sure if it will be more trouble then its worth You have to thin the originals but the sample you gave me looks like it is premixed - that its already been mixed with the thinning medium - you do have to apply it in very thin layers and stir it properly before use. Though I haven't baked anything yet so I have not tried out the clay matching paints haha you still trying to get me to make jointed bears but it aint gonna happen anytime soon I tell ya.

Thanks Fantail..it might be that I need to apply another thin coat to even it up then. I've decided to leave the faces alone for now and carry on with the rest of it. I'll fix them up after I bake it again. A BJD bear would be cool though...

'morning ;D Wonderful to hear you are enjoying making the dolly Blue.. she seems to have given no trouble, I think it's a good thing to have fun, faster projects in between the more difficult ones, makes things less stressful. Hope you have fun finishing her... How are the eyes going Fantail... I intend to finish the feet today, well I think they are finished, just check over and bake, then I can work the ankle connection around them. Hoping to do some more on the hands too. Wondering how Bll, Anubis and Lindiloo are going.. prob busy with holidays... Have heaps of fun today...

I save a few of the scoops from laundry powder for mixing resins or small paint or glue projects. I'll even steal the lids off aerosol cans if I have too. I also save the small containers like Kfc etc... It is very humid today...

Well I didn't even get the feet finished... I thought they were quite good - until I put them under the high-powered magnifier LOL. Also the toes had flattened in this heat.. Oh well, they are nearly finished... I'm not sure if my new magnifier is a bonus or a bane... ;D

I don't use a magnifying glass I would probably horrify myself hehe ignorance is bliss Blue did you use brass tubes in your BJD's limbs or not

Post by blue on Jan 19, 2011 5:57:00 GMT 12
Ive No brass tube in my bjd limbs. ( but they are a completely hollowed shell) I just couldnt manage *parts at 14 inch. i used a normal wire and foil tape armature. before baking i seamed/sliced the body sides etc to help remove it from armature after baking then glued it all back together to *work on further. i cant make one in just parts i cant seam to (fit things together. sigh. A smaller doll would be easier in parts i guess. its just out of my reach at the mo. proportions never been my strong point. About the resin. you can buy packs from the $2 shops of clear plastic shot size glasses they perfect for mixing little things. I dont know if the resin is *fussy with what its mixed in or with? if your only mixing up 1 or 2 ml a time etc what about working on a ceramic tile you can mix with toothpick then wipe clean after wards. ( miter10 sells them for usually around 65cents a small white glazed tile they handy to bake on also. had visitors yesterday so not much clay time but just need a final proof today and spot check under scrutinizing eyes and i think iddy bjd is done. I think your right Donna a fun wee project in the midst of trickery just breaks the task up enough to keep mentally enjoying it. bbl xR

The resin doesn't react to plastics.. I heard it is used to mend cracks in car windscreens ..hmm I have a few small cracks, I think you use a heat gun on it.. might be worth a try. I have a few other things on for today, but I'll definitely get the feet finished at least... I just remembered I was going to make some ballet type shoes so I prob didn't need to be so fussy. Still I need to learn to sculpt things properly, and if they are nice I wont have shoes.. Enjoy yourselves, hope you get heaps done.. ;D

I don't know if that particular resin is used for windows I think they use a particular UV activated one for windows the only instructions is that you use two flat sided cups for mixing not any particular plastic I will keep my eyes open at the $2 shops I do have two laundry cups I don't think I can do the limbs in part either - the head and the body I understand, but I don't know if I can do the body in parts either. I mixed a couple of batches of SS and white Cernit the other day couldn't understand why the batches looked so different cause I made sure I used the same ratio well Cernit has two different whites one is white, one is Opaque white(not slightly translucent) of which you'll need a lot less to mix with the only difference in the packaging is the small writing near the barcode that says white or opaque white in various languages I wish I discovered it on Monday before I mixed another batch or two

aw tails..DASH IT with the clay mix a all is not lost tho just a bit more work to sort it out but you can do it gorgeous. Yer sorry for the plastic bossy just im so cautious or try to be with plastics / chemistry etc now. some of the mixes can be down right toxic. yikers the resin(silicone plastic im gonna caste with i cant even use laytex gloves with OUCH and no iron metals only StainlessS or wood. yee gods. but the envirotex is acrylic resin based polyurethane polymer I try but confuse even myself. busy bakin bits and pieces today ...... yikes. and yer sculpt via parts...... just to hard for me but maybe once we have done a few and have heads warped around the whole joint thang it wont be to tricky

Thats scary Blue - I don't think I will play with that resin and hope you don't have to do too much with it There has to be something better suited out there I mixed some of the opaque white into the other mix but untill its baked I will have no idea if it will be ok
just started sculpting a face and I'm enjoying it so much just sad that I'll have to mess-up the eyes cause I was just using blanks

Glad your pushing clay regardless i am sure youll have it sorted in no time flat : )
was a beautiful full moon and relatively clear night last night and quite still outside. quite a contrast to the last few days thats for sure. nice to have the temps back down anyhow. phew
Iddy bjd is done i just have to hook it together paint blah blah but ive started on the bigger ones now the three torso joins are NOT matching up omg just a matter of pushing this way and that to make them rock against each other properly.
okey pokey
off to see whats lurking in the studio.

Geez they make it look so easy.. I like the idea of using pens, better control.. I still haven't found out what pens you can use. Blue, not bossy about resins/plastic, a lot of product will melt plastic, I just knew it didn't react 'coz I've used it before. The silicone stuff you're using needs caution. Fantail, hope the clay mixes are okay.. good to hear you've started a face.. ;D Blue, well done for the Bjd's, on to the fun part now eh.. Cooool You both inspired me to move on yesterday.. I got the feet finished, fixed the broken face on blue-eyes and... ahem... tried to fix the face-up mess. I patched places on the face (scratches and uneven) but sadly the patch stands out badly. I've decided I'm making them worse and it's making me disheartened... so I need to accept that they are going to have these faults, better job next time.. I placed hair on them so I could get a better feel for the end result so I would move on.. secretly I will always wish I had done a better job.. but I guess everyone must feel similar about their first attempts... I hope you have fun playing today... ;D

Oh Donna Im pretty sure we all feel the same way at times honestly. we can all look back at our works and say oh i wish id done this or that or omg look at THAT! etc. i simply cringe when i look back to some things but realistically we just do the very best we can at the time at whatever skill level we are at. * how many of us have a dodgy box??? It can be a danger to us to over critique our own work sometimes it can put you off trying when you cant achieve perfection.
So Cut it Out Big Girl your doing and have done a really wonderful job !!! and the next time you attempt this type of project it will be much easier for you ok.
draw the line as you have finish what you can and retain all you have learned from it.
Not many people start out sculpting like Michelangelo right off the bat we have to work and learn and slog it out to work up our skills.
i cant wait to see your dolly's regardless so : P do stay encouraged. youll get there just fine
but the eyes. white resin caste then hanano drills them out but the cut out gives the eyes such wonderful life. Id rather cast a shaped ball in the ready rather than risk drilling my fingers besides i can almost guarantee id never get them symmetrical either. the pens look to be gel ink pens / metallic enamel like a car touch up paint pen but the modelers version. pretty cool tho. am gonna give this a try using the white resin and super soft pinky rtv. your right tho about the chemistry. I have to wear a respirator, wear nitrate and work outside with it and its a safer medium to. the dangerous stuff will burn your skin threw even EEEEEEEKS its not for the faint hearted thats for sure and does hold risks but if you are clean and careful and well planned then there is little risk.
anyhow tho enough of that ...... back to the studio for me...
be very good you lot or else.... GRIN

Okay... I lied...I cant accept the faces as they are.. I just CANT. Psychology-on-self isn't working.. I will be cutting out the moonies, acetone to get the genesis off and sanding and refilling... it MUST be done.
HAHAHAHA!!! * insane cackle*
I'm sure you understand .... ;D

Oh dear Donna I am inspired by your persistence I would've been sculpting something easier long ago I tried the resin and it takes some getting the hang of to dab the lens on with a toothpick I used a straw to exhale on it to get rid of the bubbles and even that takes a bit of technique Fingers crossed I will have some eyes to play with in a couple of days, I do like how the resin magnifies the detail metallic gel pens, never thought of that Best of luck Donna I hope you get them perfect this time you can use a little tls or liquid fimo to get rid of the whiteness before you fill the gap with clay just brush it in lightly -not too much or your clay will squidge out- then add the clay

OOh Blue I'm so sorry to hear that.. wasn't me I swear... Oh gosh, I hope you can fix it all up, I feel sad for you... I burnt the attached legs yesterday too, only I didn't want to tell you.. and you know what.. I saw they were burning (no foil over them) and I left them ...burn you...!!!..coz I was in a shi# about it all, hehehe. Seriously, I hope it is all okay... So glad you got to the resining Fantail, it is quite tricky, you just gotta let it drop off the stick. You can prick the bubbles with a pin, a woman I know used it on Kauri tables.. she burst them with a BBQ lighter, but that would be hard on so small. Also the bubbles can appear for quite a while, so you'll have to keep checking... Thanks for your tips.. I attacked the faces with a scalpel and drowned them in acetone.. they have discoloured so wont be easy to patch so I'm not going to cut out too much. they are still going to have damage... but they are going to be much better than they were... ;D I have to go buy food and clean my unruly house... all the best... especially you Blue

let them burn.........LMAO now that is funny you... lol like Marie Antonetta LET THEM EAT CAKE !!!
sorry bout ya burnt leggies tho. but i so understand....seriously. i think most of us have had times of looking at clay burns and having a small rant....
best of luck with the eyes tails.how exciting really a. and magnified....oh i bet they look dreamy and beautiful already.
can i ask with the envirotex what is the setting time? would it / could it benefit from a vacuum ? could you use the two cup pour or tapping method to eliminate tiny bubbles?
and yer. ive sliced and diced and added a few curses. diddnt like the nose anyhow and was gonna redo the eyes anyhow just did not expect to have to redo so much. its amazing how black and hard the polymer can get tho a and hard to chop off without worrying about losin a fingertip or something along the way. sigh
oh well onwards and upwards at least it was only some(both heads and other torso parts (crucial) parts. Iddy bjd is glued back together and looking ok but.......well maybe tomorrow my eyes will see her cute again.
ill go work on the other bits now anyhow sigh stupid oven. it spiked upto 150 dunno why its always been such a brilliant oven ..... thank god for wee oven thermostats.
today is just a strange day..... hmmmmmm
ok back to the bat cave for more carnage
