Hi I've been nosing around doll show images to see what people do.. Can you use a backing board or display box or similar? Oh and if you bjd makers haven't finished the hands yet, I have an idea you might like to try... ;D

sounds like very cute socks best of luck with resin-ating it
Ugh - these limbs are no fun
Donna are you going to show us how to make those hands I don't know what the rules are about display boxes but they say the base mustn't be too big cause the ladies must be able to carry it. You could probably use a backing board- so long as its not to heavy, the little girl that entered last year had her entry in a box. You do need to tie all accessories down and the judges must be able to access the doll so that they can have a good look.

Haha... I can't even make wire and polymer clay hands yet... Thanks for the display info... I just need to know the ins and outs before I make a start... so.. the doll must be removable then? it cant be fixed down? Do they need to carry the doll to place it for display? Oh sorry for so many questions..( there will probably be more yet).. last years show was the ONLY doll show I've ever been to, and I was too awe-struck to notice things I should have (coz I wasn't planning on entering either!!!) Do you have any info from previous years or anything?

It can be fixed down - infact it needs to be securely attached to the stand but say you were to put it in a display box they must be able to access the doll to judge it - check undies or how the body was crafted etc Yes they carry the dolls from one place to another and the judges probably lift it to get a good look I don't have an electronic version of last years entry form but I do have an old 2007 one that I'll email you there might be more info in last years I'll see if I can photocopy it this weekend the snail mail it to you In the mean time you can have a looky here dollfederation.co.nz/index.php?page=gallery

The little black book officially says.........
-doll base or stand must Not be bigger than the doll. -all dolls must be securely attached to base or stand. -dolls must be inscribed with makers date and marks ( these are covered up for the judging they arent to know your name until after-wards) this can be your name in tiny print on dolls foot, neck ,hairline etc covered with a bit of white tape)
but in saying that ive seen quite a few fixed room box types with removable dolls and bears in the shows to.
My fairy was NOT attached to that horse. and i have entered fairy's on crystals unattached also so............
but they do get moved a few times before they hit the show table .. the judges are oh so careful they really are but anything unattached is at risk of breakage.
Your going to do fine Donna you really will ok. besides youll have your fan club there cheering you on.
* side note. I really should be careful in jest online sometimes things come across a little rude or harsh when meant in jest only. sometimes things can come across wrong when we dont have tone and body language to add to our manner. but please know im just a goof ball with a side dash of humor ; )
But Dearest Donna you can still be getting and bent with those bjd hands...
why don't YOU make them GRIN ! Tails will help you
< runs as fast as she can exit stage left.................

Re side note: I LUV your humour and I don't offend easily, comment/ comeback re hands was just what I expected..better in fact LOL. After I had posted I realised what a selfish creature I can be sometimes.. asking you to run around gathering info for me when you've got your own projects to sort out... then when I come back you've both passed on all this excellent information for me... Thank you both so much, that is exactly what I needed to know and see.. now I can start planning... I got an email back from Petra saying she is fine, thankfully, and is taking in the less fortunate as guests. She has left a notice on her zigzag website. I still want to make some puppets coz I havent mastered that yet, and I like puppets but I would love to do a bjd and I will.. and same response as above re jointed hands.. lol

Nah Bluey you secretly want to make those hands ;P
You're Not selfish Donna just asking good questions Have you seen a classic doll stand. The Dolls aren't per say attached to the stand but the do have a "loop"(for want of a better word) to secure them in position
So glad to hear Petra is fine ;D

LMAO sooo seriously LMAO HA................HA...........ha
i would love to make those hands...... but its neva gonna happen. EVER not in a million years, not in this lifetime or the next anyhow not until i can make a bjd body with 280 moving parts to go with it.......... grin
Donna your not selfish. PFFFFFFFFFFFT to that thought. ask away gees... this is a round table with all brains loaded semi automatic its great to squish ideas around etc. sorta like glass attick there's one topic and 50 people with diffy ways of doing things. its as interesting as heck. what works for one etc so many ways of working around things and fresh ideas thrown in for good measure. its much better than being stuck with nothing but one way of thinking.
have a really terrific day ladies

Well it's my blessing that I have this group and I will always be grateful to Bll for directing me here. I have a new passion, new friends and a new path.. how lucky am I.. ;D l'm diverting to artwork this week.. I have a young friend who was struck with an MS type disease 3 years ago which left her paralysed on her right side. Shes regained mobility but.... anyway we've talked about her continuing with her artwork, something she can do with her left hand and we're going to work on altered art projects for awhile.. she really needs this right now. Thanks for the email Fantail I know what they expect now and I'll work around that.. Have you been following Mark Dennis? I'm going to use some of his tutorials for this piece, I'm going to make the skull and teeth... ;D Enough yapping from me... back soon.....

Polymer clay artists worldwide are so generous with their time and knowledge. I am absolutely amazed at how many tutorials and information thats available. A Wonderful community of caring people. My plan is to make a young girl with a slight smile...( yep ..thats why I'm starting early..) I suck at doing the faces so Mark Dennis' tutorial for the skull and teeth should give me a better start. So my plan is to make the little girl and 2 bobble-heads at the same time..that should keep me busy. Any further with Bjds little beastie and teeny cocoon baby? I have to organize my workroom..Grrrrooooan. tomorrow is art day and polymer clay (and mess) have taken over in there... have to drag out art stuff. Have a great day. ;D

I still haven't painted the beastie so I can't go one with him till most of that is done but I am busy trying to figure out the limb joints for the bjd and started on a foot - don't even know if she will stand till I figure out the knee and can start on the other leg
Those jointed hands are beautiful
Hope you get the tidying out of the way in no time, maybe you can have a spot for the art and a spot for sculpting Whats everyone up to today?

....sweeeet!!!... good old acetone.. I love that stuff. Well my friend can't make it tomorrow now, so I didn't tidy the workroom.. bad!! Fantail yes I'm supposed to have a side for artwork and a side for polymerclay.. maybe tomorrow... Good luck with the limbs... and I'm taking note of how difficult this is for you two.. even with the skills you have... Well I made the armature for the two bobble-heads today...

Glad it worked Blue Two armatures you work fast,l Donna, I look forward to seeing them The knee didn't work needs a shelf for the thigh to rest on in order to stop the leg bending so she can stand and as for sitting I will need to carve a the thigh a bit more to allow for the hips to lean slightly but not sure if that will sort it completely

welcome to my world....... WINK it is so tricky but once youve done one youll be away laffin im sure of it. and now you can see why i chopped off my knees i think 3 times ? my own fault tho but the most important thing to remember is where your elastic will sit inside at what point will the tension be not to far forward or back etc youll get the gist of it tails i know you will its just one of those things you just have to do. the first one will be a little tedious but the next will be just fine. its like making the first bobble Donna always tricky little spots to work out and figure but your second and consecutive s will be so much easier. and yes acetone .. another wonder liquid of the gods. havin a tidy up so best get back to it

hehe I over-carved the hip joint where the string goes and now I'll have to build it back up and experiment some more haha the next one- if there is a next one I wish to try out those doubly joints I didn't like working with acetone but whatever works I guess so long as you can have plenty of ventilation

yer exactly, lethal stuff ha. bugga about the hips but thats a quick fix a. i feel your pain i bet your doing a fantastic job with it all the same. she is so gorgeous so far. why does the act of having a wee tidy up involve emptying of cartons and cleaning of shelves and the creation of a humongous pile of stuff everywhere before one gets to the task of actually just having a wee tidy up. I sorted a bunch of small shelf boxes with thoughts that i would save space and organize things by having more things away tidy. yet it has created LESS space.............where did i go wrong ? better still why did i actually even start this .......... dont fix what aint broke springs to mind. cant even be bothered finishing it up might leave it like a tipsite and do it tomorrow............ me bad

Yup you think I'll put it all in a box there and then after all the work of getting it sorted and nicely packed into a box ('cept a few extra few bits) then the box doesn't fit and should you try to put it back the way it was it just won't all fit back... I need to find out were Miss Poppins got her bag cause it would save so much time
Its the hip ball. I slipped a piece of serviette in the gap and it looks fine, sorta.
|
|
|
Post by blue on Mar 2, 2011 19:32:29 GMT 12
thats it exactly. then those few extra bits from every box need a box of their own which wont fit anywhere either. oh groan what have i done. Ms Mary poppins we need you fast. dashed hip balls they are as bad as blasted knee balls. BALLS to the balls i say.
