you know what. the resin i used was over-date embedding resin and guess what.... it is still tacky.....GROAN... i should have known. actually i did know but you know that creative urge to thrash about brushes and splash paint like your souls on fire........... I might just leave it another 24 hours and trash the canvas if its not set. but it did look so very cool in 3d dam myself! i did blast it with the heat gun and made some interesting looking bubbles but now its just a big blobby tacky mess.........ick. oh well if it does ever set ill just do more on it and see where the madness leads. but i do have some other canvas ill thrash about with... cause im pretty sure ill end up ditching this one.lmao And dont you go talking to me about that half price table Lady ( looks left and right at all manner of half price treasures) it is an evil vortex I tell you. oh sigh but isnt it wonderful couple year ago i did the hamilton show and had about 8 pieces ( ladies on big crystals) can you imagine my utter glee shopping for that. no excuse now tho..... blocks ears from hearing crystal mountains call.........i will not go i will not go i will not gooooooooooo but apparently i do have to go and buy daughter doc martin type boots today cause she simply cant live or breath anymore without them. preferable flavor of cherry red. hmmmmmmm bbl with coffee............and maybe a tad more sanity

I'm back.. accident on the Nth Western meant my 10min round trip to school took 45mins aaaarrrrgh and watching my gas plummet to below empty while I sat in streams of traffic... not a great start to the morning... poor beggars trying to get to work... Ahhh cherry red doc's will be her pride and joy... I bought Morgan a hot pink vinyl jacket before she went home... the smile freeze was worth it and wearing in sweltering heat.. bless ;D Sounds like your canvas needs to be turned into an altered art piece Blue.... stick found objects and printed tissues, images or something else on it... I've an appointment this morning.. I WILL have time to sculpt..I WILL, soon We must go to crystal mountain for lunch one day soon..

Ah embedding resins the stuff you stick things into eg paperweights. its older type resin and outdated now. but at this time it seams to be almost set. it was realy more like marine fiberglass resin ( hint of yellow) the new resins are superior to it.
and yer it will turn into altered art i bet . groan. it best set today or i shall bin it....lmao. really just needed something new to chuck on the wall not chuck in the darn bin gees
and yes cherry red docs.. her eyes went watery then glazed and couldn't make much seance outta it after a few....... i need docs mum i really really reallllllly need them mum * my chemical romance* something about a singer guy called mike and some stupid plastic lazer gun thats in the video. I found the alternative boots she liked but none in cherry red. washed out grey/ black and jet black. but zips and buckles and things gees oh well the hunt is on. i remember i always wanted a pair of patent blue docs back in the day it would have made my whole little life to have them. would been perfect with the whole ripped tights and tartan minis and my suzquie and the banchees tee shirt oh good times of the punk rock 80's lmao
glad you had a good day tails and donna. petrol went up again GASP
i guess with oil going up so will clay again.

* whispers behind hand "I've still got my black doc martens in the back of the wardrobe" hehe. Power boots.. Home now... free hearing test confirms what my males already know.. I hear EVERYTHING... New drapes for the diningroom, so over my nineties dark multi-coloured ones. 40% off.. Gotta finish painting it now... Got the courage to call in to the hairdressers... but there wasn't anything to save for sculpts.. I think I frightened the daylights outa her with my steely stare, poor girl... Resin will take 24-48 hours to cure properly so all is not lost yet... Courier just delivered my new book.. ;D mixed media mosaics, yahoo... off to the letterbox

Receiving things in the mail is fun I'm trying an aliminium tube for the limbs of my jointed dolly - the brass ones I cut was too narrow for doubled elastic

Drooooool...book is so cool. Will be excellent for using waste clay and saved bits.. Some of her work.. www.youtube.com/watch?v=JdSwvph7hOEHope you have great success with the new tubing.. will you leave it in?

Post by blue on Mar 9, 2011 12:48:20 GMT 12
aw dang dang it tails.. but am sure the new tubes will work out perfectly. trickery and trickery. dark infectious bjd can you take the tube out and drill the holes a little large in existing limbs?
was looking at my blue mess of a canvas......... it really does look like some drunk smurf threw up on it im gonna have to do something drastic. hmmmmmmmmm blow torch ?
question re easy caste.
now i know its said and done you can paint the resin with genesis and seal and bake. that would / could wear off ?
is there any preference for a good strong paint eg enamel ? with sealer? i also want to use dry chalks on the face also but not sure about which primer and sealer to use with it. needs uv protection. and very hard wearing.

I pretty sure they use spraying lacquer on the models... most of his work is large outdoor advertising... however don't take my word for it, hes coming for dinner tonight as it happens (usually Thurs) so I will get all the details off him for you. Anything else you can think of meanwhile... Now I want to make heaps of gorgeous tile type things.. but I mustn't, bobble-heads to finish and competition piece to sort out she uses original sculpey which I haven't heard good things about.. must be good for tiles and icons. Don't waste your canvas... if you aren't happy with it, set it aside..it will have another life waiting to happen...

Its for the rest of the limbs, not the old ones they just have foil inside its all good, I figured it out just after I cut them, I'm just being precious about my supplies Yip I'm leaving it in for strength
Can't you use the du kit you bought for some of the tile work

Post by Donna on Mar 9, 2011 14:13:23 GMT 12
Well you can use those brass tubes in your next bjd then. Aluminium is light weight too.
I have heaps of clay Fimo, premo, s.sculpey, sculpey light, living doll and now dukit.. I'll have to sculpt for the rest of my life... ;D
I buy it up when its sold cheap, plus I wanted to try the different types... I just thought if she used it - it must be fine for plain tiles plus I think it is cheap and I didn't want to use good sculpting clay for tiles (being precious too haha)... she uses ss for stamping etc...just thinking out loud really.
Have you done the hands yet?.. I have to do littley hands for bh's now... I havent mastered hands yet...

It will have to be another project as it won't allow a thin elastic for the arms to go through doubled Yes though not as strong, the Aluminium is nice and light it is 3.9mm wide Just the start of the one hand, I have to take her apart to shape the wrist joint Hands are tricky I can't get it in one go I bulk and shape then leave the clay for a day to firm then add detail and carve back and smooth For some reason trying to sculpt the hands straight after you added the clay to the armature doesn't work - not for me anyway
Ooh sounds like you have a wonderful assortment of clay What is sculpey light like?

Mark Dennis has moved on from his wire armature to adding rods for strength... you could use it in that way. Its actually called Sculpey ultra light. Says it is lighter than other clays so good as a filler for beads, xmas ornaments etc. Floats after baking... flexible in thin pieces for petals etc.. but mainly it states to use it for armature in place of aluminium foil... I bought it for this and used it as armature for the marionettes bodies and a solid heart to decorate. It's white and I'll probably use it for the tile making as well.

Sounds interesting. Do you know if it takes detail well and is it firm enough to hold it shape when sculpting thin petals and baking?

Blue, what is the name of the clay that Christine used to make that tiny mouse?

I recall it was a bit spongy to sculpt with when I made the heart and armatures but it was really good for that purpose.. as a base. BTW I made the heart (about an inch thick) about 8 mths ago and have left it as is so I could see if there was any 'breakdown' over time. I didn't want to use it as armature and have it crumble inside.
On the packet it shows a flower made of very thin petals. I'd be best to make some thin leaves (press in some detail) and flowers and let you know the result... ;D

ah I cant remember gorgeous but its a air dry clay, very fine and light and actually has a good flex to it to and Petra sells it.
The amazing Petra also sells stone clay which id love to try to. its an air dry clay also a little gritty looking much like asian air dry clays.
My quote for perspex vacuum chamber lid came in at $90 GASP
there has got to be a cheaper option out there somewhere. the hunt is on. and if all else fails ill just use my pressure pot lid with the vacuum gauge set up and guess work... ( doomed for failure lmao )
as for bjd painting. i intend to tint the mix . but also paint, im just not sure whats what. topmarks dont sell much post application stuff. its just hard to find out whats tried and tested. a lot of the miniaturists use the enamels and spray coat but the finish seams to thick and ruff or utterly glossed out. hmm spotted some opaque enamels tho looked suitable in the small pottles and can use them in the airbrush. just so out of my depth its not funny. RARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
i was spying a nice clearish casting resin tintable to. hmm oh my topmarks is dangerously addictive
but look your new book looks utterly amazing. i simply cant wait to see what you throw out after playing with all of those ideas. well done you.

He'll be over soon so I'll ask your queries Hoping to hit him up about eye sheets too... lol.. I'll give him his roast chicken dinner first.. I got that other clay from Petra too... was cheap as.. Oh yeah, loving new book, it adds new ideas to the agenda. They'll be fun stress-free little projects and the kids will probably have a play too...

If the enamels in the small pottels are hobby paints they are lead based and they chip and can warp with heat
Ha ha didn't notice a thing this side Blue all is quiet here
None of the air dry clay descriptions mention flexibility and I know its not Delight Paperclay Donna you don't need to make petals on my behalf I was just curious

'morning all... Blue how did the painting go, did it dry in the end? Damien put corel painter on for me and is looking at photoshop now I also downloaded gimp. I probably have all the tools just need expertise, lol. Fantail, have a good day today, hope they keep you busy. I'll make some pieces out of the light clay anyway, its always good to know what a product can do.. Blue I have scribbled down some info from Damien, hopefully I get this right.. He said for their use they use easy cast coz it sets in 5mins, they etch it with 2pk metal etch but mentioned you can use plastic adhesion primer. They use very fine mists of both primer and top coats..air dry acrylic lacquer, then clear coat if needed or appropriate. He said to tell you to look at the other casting resins as they may be better suited to your needs. He also said he finds the staff at topmark very helpful and willing to give thorough advice so suggests you contact them for the best product. When I'd mentioned an interest in sculpting he emailed them to see what products were available. They emailed him back with all the details on PC including tool needs etc. My thoughts are that a tintable resin would be ideal for you. Hope this helps in a small way... ;D

morning lufflies. thanks so much for the info. and yer just a matter of knowing what plays with what nicely. you know the first time i went to topmarks i spent over 3 hours there. i walked away with those ladies filling my head with so much information ideas i just about combusted. WONDERFUL> but i think i need a little repetition most of it floats right threw my ears. just need the practical experience for it all to slot into place. and thanks about the enamel i kinda did wonder on it. painting .............GROAN AND GROAN. its out in the sun again so by tea time it shall be the real moment of truth. it will either get the blow torch or whos to know. but DO NOT LAFF i know its not the highest quality more like amateur but its just about a fun project to help clear the head... but the clear resin on top looks so cool. it would look wicked over oils. hmmm Attachments:

;D Hey thats fantastic Blue, lots of depth, I like it. If the resin hasn't dried by now, chances are it isn't going to I have had that problem a couple of times when I didn't get the 2 pk resin mix exact. I've always managed to save it by over-coating with another layer of resin, sometimes adding a tad more hardener to the second mix, it seems to react with the uncured layer in a good way and ultimately sets it.. Best of luck... its worth working with it... ;D ott: guess who doesn't like her new hairstyle and has another hair appointment tomorrow arvo...hoping to make it better..

morning lufflies
*NB Please Be very cautious heating resins even if it just a small blast as it gives off the gasses cyanide or formaldehyde even in very small doses. Keep good ventilation in mind.
Donna if you are after larger scale hair eg human type scale I have some black and chocolate and white very thick llama fiber you can have a play with. It is harder to tame tho compared to soft mohair etc it acts human. ( it is from older animals )
hope all is well and your clay is behaving
have yourselves a fantastic day ahead
