awwww Donna Im so sorry for being so bossy honestly i honestly don't mean to be, but please do give it a go tho. ;D
next year i might do some sort of progression sculpt with armature exposed to show people part of the process. it might save having to explain it all over and over, its just easier to see as such. visual learners and all.
and yes grandy is cute as a button and yes she will be a 15 inch sculpt soon as. yaa but i will be casting her in silicone oh yer baby.
gotta dash .... back latter xR

Blue, I don't think you're bossy at all, everything you said was right, you were only encouraging me and I thank you for that..plus I'll admit to needing a good boot up the rear end quite often.. haha A sculpt of that gorgeous wee child would be beautiful, especially with how quickly they grow. Brilliant idea for the progressive sculpt too, I'm sure most people don't realise what it actually involves to create these pieces, and it could spark the creative interest in others to have a go. ;D I've added the head clay to the marionettes, but they're sculpted over a nub on the neck (so they can rotate). It worked with the troll 'cause he had a fat head and big features, but on these they look like basketballs hahaha, so still working that out. I'll be making eyes soon so I'll do trials with that resin I was telling fantail about, see how it bakes... Love to all, have a great day..

Glad you are letting them know about this- it is a whole other world and if we can solve the moonie problem then newbies might not be discouraged and I might not give up ...yeah right like I will ever stop I know what you mean by the basket ball look- I found that I had to shorten the neck to lessen that effect. Thanks for letting me know how it bakes - hope it doesn't have any fumes when baked

ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo Ive always been so intrigued by marionettes cant wait to see yours already. very very cool stuff ladies. Dont you worry about the comps Donna we are all here to cheer you on and help you get some work out there to be seen. The critics sheet is always gentle and encouraging also. but with every show there are always new people intrigued enough to *give it a go* ITs always just so excellent to see other clay works in person. I mean photos are fantastic etc but to see new pieces in life........yer baby...! and yes , silicone is a whole nuva ball game but im all set to go with it just a time management issue now ............as always. some pieces will be rotocaste and others solid set, just need practice to perfect the art. mould making really is an art form in itself. anyhow im gonna play with clay today. theres a couple of unbaked projects on the table screaming for attention. hope you all have a wonderful day ahead. and do try and be good you lot ; ) xR

Good neva Yes you need all your attention to bake them beauties I do hope you perfect the art of reproduction. It will be great if you can reproduce your dolls to your own standards, not that of the commercial world were it's sometimes quantity over quality. I ordered some clay from zigzag and may I say - swiftest and best trade I've ever had. Superb and the shipping wasn't that high either for being so fast.

;D morning Wow yes, moulding will be a whole new ball game..well worth the effort for you though, progress pics would be great. Yay that you've got time to play with clay today..personally I'm very happy you've got time to play with us now too , love your chats. Not too much time for me to play, school holidays means Mums Taxi Service is on standby, hehe, but I did manage to reduce the basketball heads to somewhat resemble normal size..but I'm having some trouble because I have to keep rotating them (to stop them sticking to neck) PLUS I've now realised (after baking, why always AFTER baking) that the shoulders are too wide, they gonna look like American footballers LOL. I'll have to be creative with the clothes me thinks. Have fun today..

the exterior of the first moulds were really ruff as to be honest Ive got to make new mould boxes / frames but it takes a few goes to tidy things up really and get the knack of it but its still workable it just takes so much time.
and the castings. OMG all different colour mixes and technices etc to find out which suited the resin. so so hard. but i have a vacuum and rotocaster now so ummm that will make life much easier that and a very fine .02 nifty snifty airbrush. oh yer baby. Im going to start using it with clay and genesis to. it should make blushing more uniform ? fingers crossed.
so theres two 15 inchers coming. a 20 inch play doll almost completed ( the face midline shifted and i just dont know if i can redeem it without scraping the face off and starting again) and another mini baby almost done. yee gods. Facepalm !!! i wont even start on the sewing projects. ...... but nice to have the time now to eventually finish these things...........
but its a sunny day today and with luck that will help speed up the motivation......
do have a fabulous day ahead

Your Lily is the sweetest...She is very alert and intent for her age...wise little soul 'Grief girl..thats some serious work you've got lined up, that'll keep you outa mischief, I can't wait to watch the progress. I've dropped a tribe of teens at Rainbows end this morning, not looking forward to picking them up tho'...from northwestern to southern motorway and back at 5pm aaarrrghhh. My choice now is make heaps of eyeballs or do housework I found a trader on Trademe selling tibetan lamb wool, so I've ordered some, cooool. She sells organza silk and angelina film too if you're interested, trading as 'dollworld' or www.dollworld.co.nz *(edited to add website for non-traders) Bugga the housework.. I'm off to make some eyes...fantail I'll make some 'flat' so I can try the resin...

Well I'm back..not much luck with making eyes so far, I couldn't find my pins until now (maybe I should've done housework ah? hehe) and I wanted to mix translucent with white, I thought I had premo or sculpey-type so looked for that, but I've only got Fimo. Do you think I should mix Fimo translucent with white premo, or just stick with white? Hmmm iris print-outs..I forgot about those, maybe I should try them too.
BLLLLL....come out and play!!!!!

;D Thanks fantail. I thought it might look more realistic to use translucent with it, but I was concerned about different temp. requirements too. I'll just use white this time, hope to make a start when I get back from Sth Auck. Leaving now, eeeeeek. thanks for your help.

its much easier than it looks. the only prob i have is when ive premade them i cant ever get the acrylic to stay clear it always either bubbles or warps slightly or mostly yellows on the second -3rd bake. so now i leave the acrylic till post bake. i know people can do it perfectly but i just cant. : (
the nail heads i use are mostly either 2.5 mm or 3 mm so its mentally small area to be painting. and yes i hear you pffffffffting tails at 3 mm. lmao you could do this with your toes in your sleep ; ) there's a very soft pale blue genesis wash around the iris to blend it into the clay. it makes all the difference.

; OH WOW, they look sooo realistic. See how the 'white' looks translucent - thats what I meant. As I've only done one set of eyes before (painted) I'm keen to have a go at different methods. I think realistic looking eyes are VERY important. Thats a good tutorial for the painted eyes too fantail, bookmarked for studying closer Blue do you just paint directly onto the nail head and insert it into a white ball? Blue, I was going to check out how the envirotex bakes, because you had mentioned the magic glos reacting to baking. But I'm thinking it would be better to create the dome post-bake myself.

No way blue I would never belittle the difficulty of fine/tiny painting I have always been a bit shaky in that department – literally

ok im totally useless at eyes its my biggest thang now days but heres some tips. a touch of blue mixed with the white paint will give the eyeball that translucent look. ( i always end up with yellowed eyeballs at the third bake with unpainted translucent clay- maybe its just my clay?) lift the top eyelid just a fractionwith something very sharp eg blade so you can get the lens edge nicely tucked under _______ otherwise you can end up with an eye that looks filled with gloss to the ridge of the lashes- makes the doll look like shes crying. one would normally make the eyeballs separately before putting into clay but i just cannot manage this.... i put my painted nailheads straight into the clay sculpt before baking. and it helps to swirl the backing colours on then stripe the darker iris with a pin. then just a soft wash of blue around the iris to blend it in. then post bake with the gloss actually Lindyloo had a great tutorial at once stage she was doing fab eyes. where is that woman !!!
